Unit 1: Introducing GenreCheck Spelling

-Genres or groups are not fixed definitions and that they change over time.
-Genres are not ‘fixed’
-In successful films we may find a pattern of repetition and difference.

Unit 2: Genre Classification

-Genre is not a fixed criteria for ‘entry’, it is dynamic.
-Repertoire of elements is certain classifications you expect to see in certain genre films, these include:
-Iconography
-Style
-setting
-narrative
-characters
-themes

Unit 3:Hollywood and Genre

-Genre began to decline cos genre theorist argued that 'genres began as fairly loose groupings that gradually evolved towards a mature or classic period.'

-Hollywood is a generic cinema, which is not quite the same as saying it is a cinema of genres (Richard Maltby 1995).

Unit 4:Audiences and Genres

There are four different audience pleasures, people getting from watching different genre films:Emotional pleasures...visceral pleasures...intelltual puzzles...Counter-culture attraction.

The role of pleasure in film viewing is pivotal in the relationship between the audience and the cinema
